Portillo’s is the ONE restaurant in Vernon Hills that I must go to every time I’m home from college. I’ve actually eaten here 3 times in the past two weeks before driving back to college. The food is just so good and unique to normal fast food. The Italian beef is a must-have whether as a sandwich or in the signature bowls (I recommend the Chicago Bowl). The hot dogs are so delicious and have poppy seeds on them, which is something I like for some reason. If you are into chocolate, the Chocolate Cake Shake is the best shake I’ve ever had. The chocolate cake alone is amazing as well. And if that’s not enough, even the ribs here are top level! And if THAT isn’t enough, Barnelli’s has pasta and salad and more for those of you in the mood for that. If you are eating inside, you get to feel the old Chicago vibes with music and decorations straight from the 1920s through the 1960s.
Portillos is a pretty famous place, cake shake and what not- but this location was just okay. Food was fine (not mind blowing) but the running from counter to counter to counter to get food and condiments and napkins and straws was a bit dissappointing. I wish they just had everything or most things at 1 counter- not 3.
Visit this place every time we are back in Illinois. Nothing like it in lower AL. They should open one! Love the chopped chicken salad, hotdogs, Italian Beef.
