I really don't understand why this place is not blowing up. The food, in my opinion is, a head above most of Mexican places around here. I can't say I have tried all of them, but I have sought out and tried a good number of Mexican restaurants around here (Lake County). I really like Hay Chihuahua's home cooked style including, of course, homemade tortillas. They often give me Ratatouille kind of comfort food moments. I really think they are something special. My family and I have been coming here at least once a week for over a year. They have started offering breakfast recently which filled with joy. I try to come here as often as I can. When you live in a place like Lake Zurich, it's rare if not impossible to find a place you would consider a "gem", and I feel like this is one of those rare occasions. As someone mentioned, the prices may seem a tad bit high, but I think it's because the place is still small and the expectation may be that the price should be cheaper. However, if you
Came here last night with my boyfriend - we ordered the quesabirrias, four skirt-steak tacos, and guac (since the reviews for the guac were really good). He said the quesabirrias were some of the best he's ever had - I tried them too and they were amazing!! The guacamole also lived up to the expectations. My steak tacos were so flavorful and as were the salsas - and the woman who helped us, who I think may be the owner, was very pleasant. All around great experience. We live pretty far away from it, so I don't know when we'll be back, but I'm looking forward to our next visit! ????
I have mixed emotions about this one. The service was not very friendly, it's really quite pricey for what you get, and the food was just "okay". The red pork tamale was large, and was better than the steak quesadilla. However, they do have housemade tortillas (both flour and corn) which normally would give this place enormous potential for greatness, BUT instead they only offer them on a few limited menu items (?! WTH ?!). Oh so close, yet still so far.
