I remember when this restaurant opened up (late 90s). It was direct competition to an established Purple Onion restaurant less than a block away. Needless to say Al's won. Every visit to Birmingham I have a Gyro combo with an order of mushrooms. Try an order of mushrooms on any Baker. The food at Al's is a different flavor profile than typical Birmingham cuisine. Try something different because ALL of it is good!
Very good authentic food! Calling is the only reason I gave this restaurant a four star. They're very busy and can only answer phone when they have a chance. If it's a call-in order, please make sure to get in line when picking up. I've seen food go in the garbage for breaking in line. Very good people, very good food.
This is “The Place” to eat in Birmingham! We enjoyed it even though we carried it back to the hotel it was Great !
