Nice restaurant inside the First Americans Museum in OKC. It has a variety of Native American food on the menu and it's quality, not normal museum food. Wait staff can be rude as myself and three others were told to "move out of the way" while we were waiting to order at the bar register so he didn't have to walk around us. They seemed to be getting busy but flustered. They also couldn't accommodate minor changes in the menu such as American cheese instead of Swiss, but it's understandable if understaffed, or less qualified is what it seems like. Still a nice atmosphere.
Sometimes a museum can be great but the restaurant… not so much. This is not the case with 39 - both are incredible. I decided to try several items for the Saturday brunch; blueberry pancakes, hominy stew, fry bread and the corn and squash arugula salad. All were outstanding. The pork in the hominy stew was as tender and flavorful as any I’ve ever tasted. The fry bread was a surprise… my only experience before was at the State Fair. This was completely different - dense and rich. I’m not a salad guy but loved the cranberry vinaigrette on this salad! Everything amazing! We enjoyed the heck out of this meal and I’m planning to go back during the week for the expanded menu - Monday they Friday. You won’t be disappointed! This place is excellent; and the museum is incredible and sobering.
We were VERY disappointed in 39 Restaurant but now we know we will never go back. I should have read the description of the place better. The key word in the description is “Modern” Cuisine. Some of my family is Native. I grew up with them as neighbors, went to school with them, have them as co-workers and friends and this Food reminded us of what Tex Mex Cuisine is to Mexican Cuisine. It’s an embarrassment and doesn’t represent Oklahoma. It only represents the Chefs. One of which is described as Indigenous and an Award Winner. Tourists who go to that Restaurant, who haven’t been around Natives as much as my family have, do not understand that the Restaurant is all hype and no substance. Service wasn’t good either. We ran out of Tea and after several minutes I had to flag down our Server for a refill even though the Restaurant barely had any customers. No more Customers then they had was another sign that despite some of the hyped up reviews it’s not worth the money or the time.
