Karina's Cantina Gaslamp

I had a late lunch with some friends during a work trip to San Diego. The ceviche trio is huge and was delicious. I couldn’t finish even half of it. The space itself is gorgeous and very well decorated. Service was great, and prices were fair. It was a great experience.

The tampiquena was surprisingly bland. I spiced it up with the tasty, garlicky house salsa that came with the chips. By contrast, the enchilada sauce was amazing - thick and earthy with a hint of cinnamon. Guacamole was also bland, but the margarita was good and strong. Service was pleasant, and the decor was nice. Prices were high for lunch.

Great location in the heart of the gas lamp district, the restaurant has a great feel inside. I came strictly to sample the ceviche, and have no complaints. The ceviche sampler comes with three types of ceviche and is only $25. It's a huge portion that even two of us could not finish. The margaritas were strong and impressive. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty due to it being opening time. A great location to have drinks and eat. Night would be better for groups. Plenty of private seating. I even noticed a bookshelf wall that could be pushed in that led to a private dining area above. Creative. Latin music definitely sets the scene and music videos play on large screens above the bar next to the giant Frida portrait. Murals and Latin art incase the dining area. The service was wonderful and attentive. The only complaint I have is the chips and tostada shells. They seem to of been cooked in dirty oil or over-done because they were extremely heavy and dark.
