I was happy to hear of this restaurant coming to Grand Ave, since I like the food at the original Hing Lung in SF Chinatown. I haven't dined in yet, but bought takeout a number of times. I was impressed with some dishes. Thumbs up for the Mixed Grain Fried Rice. Tasted great! It would be an excellent choice for the more health-conscious eaters. The congees were delicious, and perfect for sharing (unless that's all you want to eat for one meal). The chow mein and chow fun were also yummy. Although this is a Chinese restaurant, I highly recommend the Japanese Style Diced Beef. I found the beef surprisingly tender. I also enjoyed the Fried Dough a lot. Now the not-so-good parts: I was very disappointed that none of the rice noodle roll dishes were available for ordering (though they're listed on the menu). When I asked when they would actually start selling them, they said they don't know. I was also disappointed at their Fried Bread, which the SF Chinatown Hing Lung makes so perfectly. I
I have never been to the other Hing Lung locations, but this one was overall a great meal. I came in on a Sunday night for dine in dinner, and it was quite busy. Despite that, we got seated and given menus almost immediately. We ended up ordering six dishes, Shrimp Wonton (+Add Shrimp Dumpling) Noodle Soup, Clay Pot Rice with Pork Spareribs w/ Black Bean Sauce, HK Style Beef Chow Fun, Braised Beef Stew with Radish in Pot, Pea Sprout with Garlic, and Salt & Pepper Wings. F1. Shrimp Wonton (+Add Shrimp Dumpling) Noodle Soup – Really good, both the wonton/dumplings were fresh and quite big! We asked for braised beef stew sauce to add to the broth to make it more flavorful, and they easily accommodated us. H2. Clay Pot Rice with Pork Spareribs w/ Black Bean Sauce – The flavor of this dish was good and it had a good amount of meat, but the rice itself was a bit too wet for my taste. L7. HK Style Beef Chow Fun – I always order this at restaurants when its available, and what stuck out to me
Decided to do a pick up order from Hing Lung. Most or the time, the food is consistently good. The wonton is always hot and a good choice. The bittermelon with beef was horrible! They cut the bittermelon in big chunks and they were not fully cooked and still had raw taste. The few pieces of beef were simply ok. I might not return to this restaurant for a while and definitely will not order the bittermelon beef.
